Let's talk about fresh water pearls

Pearls are one of my favourite gems to work with. I am constantly challenging my self on how to modernise and update pearls as I believe they bring light to your face when worn with necklaces or earrings, especially as the perfect compliment to a black outfit.

So, what is a freshwater pearl?

Freshwater pearls are pearls that are farmed and created using freshwater mussels. The majority of freshwater pearls produced today come from the Hyriopsis Cumingi species. Freshwater pearls are not bead-nucleated and are therefore typically less round. The unique culturing method used to create freshwater pearls means that perfectly round freshwater pearls are very rare, making each pearl completely unique and one-of-a-kind.  Personally, this is what attracts me to them - this irregular shape.

Freshwater pearls are durable in nature. If cared for properly, they will retain their original colour and luster for decades to come.

How to care for pearl jewellery

  • To protect the surface of your pearls, put them on after your beauty routine. It is important to avoid contact with skincare products, including fake tan, hairspray and perfume.

  • To help your pearls keep their luster, wipe them with a soft cloth before you store them.

  • In order avoid scratches, store separately from your other jewellery in a soft cloth pouch.

  • Wear pearls often to keep them from drying out. Pearls love the your natural skin oil, but avoid excessive sweating.

  • Never use any harsh cleaning products on them like silver dips or cleaners
