The perfect jewellery gift from a husband to his wife: a bespoke made gold wishbone pendant

There’s a certain element of magic embodied in the jewellery we choose to wear. It usually has talismanic quality to it and what more symbolic than a wishbone. Because of its symbolism of luck, potential luck and love, the wishbone is an ideal symbol as a gift for a variety of occasions. It’s acknowledging that the person has a wish that you hope will come true for them.

It has been used since the Romans to the Victorians. Jewellery that was symbolic, became very popular with the Victorians. They loved wearing jewels that had hidden meanings associated with them. The evolution of wishbone jewellery moved past luck and became a symbol of love. The act of giving a wishbone ring, is believed to bring two people closer together.

So when I was asked to make this commission as a gift from a husband to surprise his wife on her birthday I was delighted. She had a wishbone pendant she loved but had tarnished and ruined when she tried to clean it - unfortunately that is what happens to base metals.

He wanted to surprise her with a new one for her birthday, but wanted it made to last forever. And what more noble material than 18 carat gold?. 18 carat gold has a beautiful weight and colour to it plus it will last for many generations to come. We emailed back and forth with photos and dimensions, and off I went to make this wonderful gift.

By using ancient techniques such as wax carving and lost wax casting this pendant was made with 80% recycled gold. I kept the making entirely in London, all within a 20 mile radius ensuring the smallest closed loop sustainability system posible.

They may not know it but the lucky one here is me. By being entrusted in the making of these wonderful treasures that hold so much meaning and love, I am the lucky one.
