Bespoke cocktail ring - London Blue Topaz set in gold
Making an idea come to life: The bespoke cocktail ring
For me it's never just been about the jewellery. As a designer, I am driven by the stories and what inspired the pieces themselves. Sharing this story about a commission, which had a particularly wonderful process behind it, is important so that I can show the process behind bespoke jewellery.
The idea for this statement ring:
My client had been wanting a big cocktail ring for a while, we had chatted about it casually a few times but she had not made the leap. When she finally decided to go forward with it, she had a very clear idea of what she wanted. When we went through a few photos she had seen on Pinterest, it was clear to me that she wanted a show stopper of a cocktail ring. As she was very clear about the specific size, colour and metal, it was just a question of adding my experience and expertise to bring her ideas alive.
Sourcing that amazing London Blue Topaz
An 18-carat London blue topaz in a cushion cut is not something that is particularly easy to source. So I had to have it cut to my specifications with my trusted gem dealers in Hatton Garden, who did not disappoint. This is the thing about being in the trade for so many years - you know where to go and who to trust. My gem dealers only trade in the highest quality gemstones and have very high standard ethical procedures. For me both of these things are key when choosing a supplier.
The design process:
I drew up some sketches, but more importantly I made a silver mock up of the ring I always like to make a mock up, as I think it is important for the client to see how the ring will sit on their hand and a mock up always gives you a better idea of what the final piece will look like.
The result:
Afterward approving the mock up I proceeded to make in 18 carat gold and set the stones. Last but not least was taking it to the London Assay office to have it hallmarked. Hallmarking will guarantee the metal’s purity and quality assurance.
She was delighted with her ring and I love the fact that she does not save it just for dressing up but wears it casually in her day to day life!
