An Alternative Engagement Ring for a Sea-Loving Couple

The groom putting on the bride the wedding band that sits perfectly nested into her engament ring.

THE PROJECT

A Beautiful Aquamarine Engagement Ring

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Gaspar and Melanie on their engagement and wedding bands. It was quite a journey, as we started during lockdown and worked remotely from Venezuela to London.

As a Wimbledon, south west London, jewellery designer I have the privilege to do bespoke jewellery work with clients all over the world.

Originally, I started working with Gaspar, as he is an old friend. He was looking to propose with a traditional emerald-cut platinum diamond solitaire. However, I managed to convince him to involve Melanie in the design, and the engagement ring took a completely different direction as she had ideas of her own.

They decided on a pear-shaped aquamarine solitaire set in platinum. Melanie and Gaspar were an absolute joy to work with.

THE BRIEF

An Alternative Yet Timeless Engagement Ring

Though the brief changed after getting Melanie on board, we knew the ring had to tell part of their love story.

As keen windsurfers, their favourite weekend pastime involves spending time on the Caribbean Sea enjoying their favourite sport. Margarita Island was where they loved spending time, so a beautiful blue aquamarine made perfect sense.

A perfect alternative to the traditional diamond engagement ring, a beautiful pear shaped aquamarine solitaire.

THE APPROACH

Let the gemstone do the talking

It all started with sourcing different sizes and cuts of aquamarines with my trusted London gemstone suppliers. I took out at least ten different ones on apro for them to look at and appraise. All this was done via Zoom. Looking at gemstones via a computer screen is not ideal, but with today’s technology, it can be easily done.

Once the perfect aquamarine was chosen—a pear-shaped beauty—I proposed a knife-edge band to give it a bit of edge and cool platinum as the metal to show off against the bride’s lovely skin.

The wedding band made to fit perfectly with the engagement ring, mirroring the shape of the stone and knife edge.

THE RESULTS

An Alternative Engagement Ring for a Sea-Loving Bride

A sea-blue coloured aquamarine represents their love of the Caribbean Sea, far removed from the traditional diamond yet timeless, modern, and sleek for the engagement ring.

A sleek V-shaped wedding band was designed to nest into the engagement ring perfectly.
